Jessica White spent her childhood transported by storybooks while growing up in Taiwan. Following a career in academics as the Professor of Printmaking at Warren Wilson College, she is now a studio artist in Asheville, NC, USA. Her practice revolves around relief prints, wood engravings, letterpress printing, and storytelling through crankies. She draws inspiration from folk tales and the ancient beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in public collections including Yale University, Stanford University, Lingnan University Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the co-founder of Ladies of Letterpress, an international trade organization of women printers, a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild, and is the current President of the Wood Engravers' Network.
Presentation and Q&A with the Artist

Date | April 25th (Sat.) 1pm30 - 3pm
Venue | Muse Garden, Taiwan Literature Base

This session will be a presentation by Jessica White where she introduces her work, and the evolution of her research which led her to her current work. Starting with early prints influenced by early children's book illustrations, Jessica will discuss what led her from a career as a sculptor towards book art and letterpress printing.
She will have a display of prints and handmade books that demonstrate a variety of relief printmaking techniques that's been part of her practice including linocut, woodcut, letterpress, and wood engraving. In this display are a set of completed pages for the woodcut graphic memoir "Made in Taiwan."
She'll also share how her own research into scrolls led to an evolution of her book art to crankies, a storytelling structure rooted in the history of the Appalachian Mountains where she currently lives. The presentation will end with a performance of crankies set to song.
